How to get to Serengeti - Access to Serengeti National park and getting there from Arusha

Quickest Way: By Air (1-1.5 hours)

  1. Departure Airport: Arusha Airport (ARK) is the primary hub for domestic flights to the Serengeti. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is used for international arrivals, about 50km from Arusha.
  2. Arrival Airstrips: The park has around 10-12 airstrips, with Seronera Airstrip being the main hub in the center.
  3. Airlines: Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Grumeti Air provide daily flights.
  4. Transfer: Lodge staff usually handle transport from the airstrip to your camp.


Most Scenic Way: By Road (6–10 hours)

  1. Distance: Approximately 325km to 460km, depending on the destination gate (Naabi Hill Gate is the most popular).
  2. Route: Driving typically goes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, allowing for a combined safari route.
  3. Transportation: Most visitors book a 4x4 land cruiser with a driver-guide. It is a long, bumpy, but scenic journey.


Recommended Itinerary Options

  1. Fly-in/Drive-out: Fly into the Serengeti for convenience, and drive out, allowing you to experience the Ngorongoro Crater on the way back.
  2. Combined Safari: Stop in Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro for a night before arriving in the Serengeti to break up the journey.
